Making the Most of Stormy Weather: A Cozy Winter’s Day on the Roseland Peninsula
As hosts of Bay Tree Barn, we love experiencing our holiday cottage through the eyes of our guests. Recently, we had the chance to stay during the winter season, just as Storm Bert swept across the UK. While the wild weather ruled out our usual beach adventures, it led us to discover some hidden gems perfect for those occasionally blustery Cornish days.
With the wind howling outside, we decided to treat our boys to an indoor swimming adventure at Trewince Holiday Lodges. Housed in a beautifully converted barn, their facilities proved to be the perfect storm shelter. For just £8 per adult and £5 for children over 5, we enjoyed exclusive access to their impressive amenities – an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and gym.
The wonderful Michelle at Trewince gave us such a warm welcome, showing us around the facilities. Our eight-year-old couldn’t resist the allure of the hot tub, while the little ones splashed happily in the children’s pool. It’s worth noting that non-residents can use these excellent facilities during the off-season – a perfect tip for fellow guests staying at our cottage during the cooler months.
After our swim, we braved the elements for a brief walk around charming Portscatho, just a three-minute drive from Trewince. The wild weather only added to the dramatic coastal atmosphere! Following Michelle’s excellent recommendation, we then headed to the Cornish Italian, located just outside Veryan and about 10 minutes from Bay Tree Barn. If you’re craving authentic Italian cuisine during your stay, this place is an absolute must-visit. The food was simply outstanding!
As the storm continued to rage, we returned to Bay Tree Barn for the perfect end to our winter’s day. Curled up in front of the crackling fire with a family film, we felt incredibly cosy and grateful for our warm retreat. It struck us that sometimes the most memorable holiday moments come from embracing whatever the weather throws at you.
For guests visiting during the winter months, we highly recommend this itinerary for a rainy day. The combination of indoor swimming, a brief coastal walk (weather permitting!), a delicious meal, and a cozy evening by the fire perfectly showcases how the Roseland Peninsula can be just as magical in winter as it is in summer.
